This survey of the county past and present, town and country, people and place, has been written by one who has known it all her life and who has written and lectured on the subject for twenty-five years.

The Lancastrian receives his heritage from Celt Anglian and Norse, we well as from waves of incomers during the past 150 years. All these influences make themselves felt on the speech patterns and the way of life of a Lancastrian.

Lancashire stretches from the Mersey to the Lakes, from the Pennines to the sea. Within these borders every variety of landscape can be found - great cities cotton-belt towns renewing themselves and unchangimng countryside, high mountains and wild moorlands, lonely shores and holiday beaches.
