Seller's Description
Pneumatic Railway Dig at Risk – 1989 Newspaper Cutting – Daily Telegraph
- Size: 14cm wide x 20cm tall
- Date: Fri 29th December 1989
- Condition: Used with some browning from age. “DT 29/12/89” is written in biro just beneath the image – but the writing is very small and hardly noticeable. Minor 5mm tear at bottom of clipping. See images for full condition.
- Comments: An experimental pneumatic railway was built in Crystal Palace park in 1864, to carry fare paying passengers. It was set up by Sir Thomas Rammel to show that there was a clean alternative to the smoky steam engines on the London Underground railway system of that time. Unfortunately, the project folded financially. The newspaper story is not so much about this but about an archaeological dig by the Marquis du St Empire, in 1989, to try and uncover the remains of this railway, the stations and the engine house. Unfortunately at the time of this newspaper story that had run out of money too! On the reverse side of this newspaper cutting you will find share prices from the 29th Dec 1989.
- This newspaper cutting will be sent in a nice sturdy cardboard envelope.
