Seller's Description

This is a postcard-sized black & white photo showing (I think) the British Railways 4-6-0 steam locomotive no. 4007 hauling a passenger train, possibly in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Although the number is not visible on the loco, ‘4007’ has been written on the back of the photo. The loco was ex-GWR Star class, dating from 1907, and was withdrawn from BR service in 1951.

The train reporting number on the front is 198.  According to a railway enthusiast friend, 198 was the 1845 Paddington-Hereford service in the late 1950s, so this might be the same service at an earlier date. Given the daylight in early evening, it would presumably be in late spring/summer/early autumn.
