Seller's Description

CHAU3358 Antique 1966 letter from historic WW2 doctor (Elston Grey Turner) to fellow doctor Philip Wilcox of an antique newspaper article where both their fathers are mutually mentioned which is four pages and included (you will see the scan of page 1 laid behind the hand signed letter. It is folded but otherwise very good condition indeed.

This has come from the private collection from the estate of Doctor Elston Grey-Turner CBE MC TD (16 August 1916 20 January 1984) who was a British medical doctor who served in World War II and was on the staff of the British Medical Association for many years. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served as regimental medical officer to the 2nd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards 19421945. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration, and also the Military Cross.

Philip Willcox was a general physician in Windsor whose career extended from the late 1930s through the Second World War, to the first 30 years of the NHS. He was the youngest son of Sir William Henry Willcox From 1938 to 1939, Philip was medical registrar at St Marys and, from 1939 to 1942, in the Emergency Medical Service at Park Prewett Hospital, Basingstoke. He then joined the RAMC and served in India and Burma, reaching the rank of major; he was in the siege of Imphal. Not only did his service give him a lifelong affection for the East: it also greatly broadened his experience, especially in infectious diseases, which remained one of his major interests. In his later years, he was one of the last doctors still familiar with smallpox, and was occasionally summoned to Heathrow to advise on suspect cases.
