Seller's Description
Oxford Bus Stop 1976, Cornmarket Street, Large Photo
Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period scene of Cornmarket Street, Oxford in 1976. An ex-Midland Red 1963 Alexander bodied Daimler Fleetline, fleet number 910, registration plate 5284HA, route 590 and destination board 'Park & Ride' has passed Boots chemist and is approaching the High Street crossroads alongside Lloyds Bank. It is 1.55pm on a busy friday afternoon and although Cornmarket Street had not yet been fully pedestrianised, the number of people walking in the road is indication that this street warranted it. In 1976 the first phase of pedestrianisation was already underway, with Cornmarket Street only being accessible to buses, but today it is a fully pedestrianized 'zone', with vehicle access allowed only at specific times.
Oxford was one of the earliest to initiate the 'Park & Ride' service in the 1970's due to the high population of 'car-less' people at the time, and this particular park & ride bus is adorned with a classic banner advertisement of the day, which reads 'How the west was won - Falmer Genius'. Falmer being a quality and very trendy denim jeans company of the 1970's.
A typical 1970's week-day scene in Oxford depicting a classic park & ride Fleetline in action.
