Seller's Description

[Title]: Das sechste Kriegsweihnachten.

[PWB/AFQH 1944]. Original aerial propaganda leaflet. 2 pages, illustrated. 121 x 198 mm. Text in German.

Code T/49. - Jungmayr 36. - Naumann (1999), Klaus Mann. Bilder und Dokumente, p. 282. - Klaus Mann, Diary Entries (October 16th  and December 14th , 1944).

This is a fascinating leaflet authored by Klaus Mann, the son of renowned Nobel prize-winning German author Thomas Mann. Klaus Mann, a noted writer in his own right, served in the 5th U.S. Army during the Italian Campaign as part of the Psychological Warfare Branch. His duties included interrogating captured PoWs, delivering loudspeaker broadcasts, and crafting propaganda leaflets.

The present leaflet was first formulated in October 1944: "A lot of noise and excitement over a photo (German mother) that I want for a new flyer. Found a woman posing with a baby" (Klaus Mann, Diaries 1944-1949, p. 53).

Crinkling, scuff and burn marks, discolouration, edge wear with slight loss of paper (not affecting the text). The current leaflet exhibits the typical signs of wear associated with having been recovered from an unexploded artillery shell. - Rare.
