Seller's Description

OLD VIC DRAMA: A Twelve Years Study of Plays and Players by Audrey Williamson.

This book is something quite apart from the usual historical study, and provides a valuable and comprehensve critical record of the productions presented by the Old Vic Theatre Company in London during the period 1934 to 1947. This period, culminating in the recent seasons with Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Ralph richardson at the New Theatre and the advancement of the Old Vic towards National Theatre status, is, we believe, one of vital interest and importance.

The book deals with over sixty productions of plays by Shakespeare,Tchekov, Ibsen, Shaw, Euripides and others. The actors and actresses who appeared in these plays included John Gielgud, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike. Maurice Evans, Emlyn Williams, Robert Donat, Michael Redgrv, Robert Helpmann and many others whose work is now well-known, A concluding postscript deals with the Old Vic's varied provincial activities and aspects of its futre policy.

With a Foreword by Dame Sybil Thorndike.

A Collectable VINTAGe hardback published in 1948 by Rockliff
