PLEASE NOTE I ACQUIRED A PAIR OF OCTAVIUS T CLARK'S RIVER LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTINGS. BOTH ARE OF KNOWN (see the back) BUT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN SURREY. THE LOCATIONS ARE A MERE 34 MILES APART. OCTAVIUS OFTEN SOLD HIS PAINTINGS IN PAIRS . BOTH PAINTINGS HAVE THE SAME DIMENSIONS. QUITE OFTEN THE ACTUAL LOCATIONS ARE NEARBY as in this case. (The painting offered elsewhere is stated as being near Richmond)

For sale here we have :-
Octavius Thomas Clark (British 1850-1921) Rural River Landscape verso " ????????? near Godalming" Possibly the river Wey is mentioned ?? . I have taken a few photos in order to try and determine the river. This distressed oil painting needs cleaning and sympathetic Restoration
~~~~~~
'Octavius Thomas Clark' (1850-1921) A SUPERB ANTIQUE RIVER LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The attention to detail throughout the painting is truly magnificent and the painting appears to show something different each time it is viewed. Today I noticed the smoke coming out of a distant house to the right of the church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This highly interesting painting which would benefit from further local research. Contact with members of the local Godalming Local History Society would naturally be a good starting point.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Moreover now we have established that Clark painted near both Godalming and Richmond upon Thames the local sleuth can try and positively identify other currently unknown river scenes in other collections. In my research of this (and the other Octavius T Clark work near Richmond) I have notice some likely "Surrey area" suspects.
~~~~~~~~~~
This painting is looking for an appreciative local owner or even Institution who is prepared to have it restored in time to benefit from being professionally re-lined, re-cleaned
~~~~~~~~
Octavius T. Clark was a British painter who was born in 1850.
Octavius T. Clark's work has been offered at auction multiple times,
~~~~~~~~~
In both paintings (offered for sale on this site) Clark has refrained from adding people - here he allows a pair of swans and a castellated church plus a couple of partly hidden dwellings
In both paintings he concentrates on his love of painting trees for which he excels.
