Original French 47 inch x 63 inch Poster for the 1981 István Szabó Drama MEPHISTO, based on the novel by Klaus Mann and starring Klaus Maria Brandauer, Ildiko Bansagi, Krystyna Janda, Rolf Hoppe, Gyorgy Cserhalmi, Peter Andorai, Karin Boyd and Christine Harbort.

Mephisto details the rise of a Faustian character who figuratively sells his soul in exchange for greatness. Hendrik Hofgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) is the star of a state-funded theater department who tires of his job. Like his friends, he pays lip service to socialist ideals fashionable for artists of his time -- that is, until the Nazis rise to power. He then sees an opportunity to achieve his objective of fame: he will perform propaganda plays and thereby use the Nazis as a vehicle to spread his name across the country -- only too late does he realize his mistake.

Poster art by Rene Ferracci (1927 -1982). A French artistic director and poster designer. He is, with Clément Hurel, Boris Grinsson, Michel Landi and Jean Mascii, one of the most prolific creators of cinema posters in France in the second half of the 20th century.
