Maråk (or Merok) is an area and a farm by the fjord in Geiranger . [1] In 1603 the name was written Marracker, later also Marag and Mæraag. [2] The name comes from " Marr - åker ", from merr (mare) or marr (horse). The name can also originate in mar in the sense sea because the area or farm is located right down by the fjord. The place name is only found in Geiranger. [2] The family names Maråk, Merok and Maraak are derived from this. [3]

Maråk is the center of Geiranger and the end point for Geirangervegen . [4] Møll and Grande got a proper road to Maråk in 1947, in 1956 it became a road between Eidsdal and Maråk ( Ørnevegen ). [5] Merok is also the name of a hotel in the city center. [3] The hotel was established in the 1860s as the first in Geiranger. [6] It was originally operated in a small wooden building at the water's edge. [7] Later, the Geiranger hotel came close by. Maråk is the beach resort that is closest to the border with Oppland. Before Geirangervegen was built, salted and dried fish were probably brought on a fork to Ottadalen from Maråk. Jens Kraftwrote in 1832 that the farmers from Lom and Skjåk came to Maråk with tar, pitch and liquor which they exchanged for fish. [8] Maråk served for periods as a marketplace. [5]
