Seller's Description

Original 5 1/4 inch x 6 5/8 inch 1879 Etching titled MAISON DE LA RUE DES VERGEAUX, A AMIENS.

The Maison de la Rue des Vergeaux is called the Maison du Sagittaire. Former trading house located in rue des Vergeaux, 500 metres from its current location, whose facade, dismantled stone by stone after the Second World War, was rebuilt identically, in place d'Aguesseau, against the Logis du Roi . This superb Renaissance facade (16th century, despite the two large windows of Gothic inspiration) is attributed to Charles Bullant, nephew of Jean Bullant who signed the construction of the Château d'Ecouen. Property of Jean Bultel, a wealthy draper merchant, this house owes its name to the two small arrowheads located above the store's two bays. A Virgin and Child and other allegorical sculptures adorn the facade, inspired by the Iconology of Cesare Ripa.

Drawn and etched by Dieudonné Auguste Lancelot (1822 - 1894). A French lithographer, engraver and illustrator. He was a pupil of Anne-François Arnaud, from Troyes, and exhibited at the Salon periodically, from 1853 to 1876. He illustrated publications such as “Le Tour du monde”, “Le Magasin picturesque”, “Le Monde illustré”, “Les Jardins”, and “Guides-Itinéraire” and the “Guides-Cicerone du Paris illustré,” a guide for travelers (1855) with Émile Thérond.

Engraving from a disbound copy of ‘La Renaissance en France’ by Leon Palustre. Published by A Quantin, Imprimeur-Editeur, 7, Rue Saint-Benoit, Paris, 1879.

Page size 17 3/8 inch x 12 1/2 inch

The etching is in very good condition. Printed text on the reverse.
