Leeds 1970, City Square Bus & Traffic, Large Photo
Description: This is a Large 12" inch x 8" inch photo of a period traffic scene in Leeds in September 1970, where a Roe bodied AEC Regent Leeds City Transport bus, registration TNW756, fleet number 756, route number 16, destination 'City Square' is heading up York Street past busy traffic lights at the crossroads with Duke Street, which was the old A61 route through Leeds City Centre towards York. The bus is followed by a Ford Corsair, a Ford Zodiac and a Leeds AEC bus. The bus is just about to pass the old bus station which is out of shot on the right of the bus. For context, if the bus had turned right at the traffic lights, in a few moments it would have passed the old Quarry Hill flats (Queenie's Castle) on the right hand side, on Duke Street/St Peters Street A61.
On first look, the location now may seem unrecognizable, but the curved building with glass windows in the photo has thankfully survived the years of redevelopment, and you will find this same building today on the somewhat larger crossroads of York Street and the A61, opposite the current Leeds City bus station which is in the same location as the old original Leeds City bus station.
