POSTCARD - p/u 1911
CAPTIONED/DEPICTING
Rusthall School Float heading up
Mount Pleasant, TUNBRIDGE WELLS
The banner on the side of the float reads “WILLIAM the CONQUEROR granting the CHARTER to the CITIZENS of LONDON”
The card was postally used on 27th August 1911, and mailed to Fritz Gerlach, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Curious about the writing on the reverse, I asked a friend if she could translate the message, and this is what she said……..
“The card you attached was difficult to read, because it is written in old letters, which are not in use anymore. I learned about it some 60 years ago. I could guess a lot, but I think I can still read these old letters, although I could not write them anymore. So here is what I think is the text on the card:
“Beloved friend and brother in the Lord. Many, many thanks for your very kind letter, received on Saturday. I am especially pleased to hear about your work in the Kingdom of God, all that you tell me about interests me very much. Thank God, that you are healthy and cheerful. May HE help you further more as HE has done so until now. Your faithful sister in the Lord. Marie. Picture of my stepbrother with a moustache."
There are several men in the picture all sporting moustaches, so not sure which one she refers to!
At the time the writer of the card was living at 30 Dudley Road, Tunbridge Wells.
NOTE: This cart also appears in a Camburn card of the same event - No.24
