A fine film of an era gone by. John Wayne - the tireless and confident calvary commander - leads his troop as they seek to protect the 'wild west', all the while trying to put his life back together with a son he hasn't seen in years and a wife who's been long out of his life. Yes, John Wayne's acting often carried these films during what I would argue is the strongest period of his acting life, but I tend to focus on the fine circle of supporting actors that Wayne and Ford often relied upon to carry a movie through. While many things can be said about Ford - good and bad - he clearly knew what he was doing when he made the movies of this trilogy - first, get Wayne on board and then surround him with the great number of regulars that Wayne always worked with consistently and who he felt comfortable with. Maureen O'Hara, a beautiful lady who convincingly plays a strong and confident spouse without coming off as an unrealistically overbearing; Ben Johnson as Tyree - the tireless troop who could be counted upon to do whatever is necessary - even though he 'might' be a wanted man out of Texas, Victor McLaglen as Sgt Major Quincannonthe - the silent glue that keeps things moving along - a man as strong as the whiskey he loves; and the Sons of the Pioneers as the regimental singers (rather than rely on a soundtrack in the background, this movie has the actual group providing the melodies whenever necessary to affect the movie's mood.
