But this seeming logical development was interrupted several times by fresh impulses from Constantinople and the Byzantine provinces, as Fr. Demus pointed out, which helped to establish a close link with the development of Byzantine art itself. And however the development of Venetian art deviated from the evolution of metropolitan art, new Byzantine influences brought it back again and again, and therefore Venetian art should rather be seen as a parallel to the actual cultural Byzantine evolution, until it finally stood out in a peculiarly Venetian Byzantine-Gothic line.
