Seller's Description
zx857 Antique WW1 postcard of the Irish Counties War Hospital in Glasnevin in 1918 housing soldiers injured in the war. Has corner fraying and small corner indents, some ageing (see scan) and a very "used" appearance graded g/g+ but a very rare local wartime postcard showing the injured Irish soldiers all together playing billiards in the hospital with 1918 frank on reverse.
In April 1917 the British War Department took over the establishment for use by the Irish Counties War Hospitals Committee. It was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant in July as a convalescent home for sick and wounded soldiers, staffed by the Royal Army Medical Corp. Many patients were transferred from KVGH. During the Tan War the military continued its previous use and also garrisoned troops there. There are unconfirmed suggestions that Auxies may also have been based and hospitalised in Marlborough Hall.
This has come from a giant antique postcard snooker and pool collection where the owner had amassed probably one of the greatest snooker collections of its kind - Please see all my other antique snooker and pool postcards at my store from this same former owner.
