Seller's Description
Leather bound 2nd edition copy of 'Ion; A Tragedy in Five Acts To Which Are Added A Few Sonnets' printed in London by A.J. Valpy for private circulation (not published) in 1835. The book has had at least three owners that I know of. This copy has the inscription 'Presented to The Lady Mary Shepherd by the Author'.
Lady Mary Shepherd née Primrose (1777-1847) was a Scottish philosopher and author of at least two philosophical books and was well respected in Edinburgh at the time. She was the second daughter of the 3rd Earl of Rosebery and is pictured below.
There is also a book plate for Henry Rowland Brandreth (1794-1848) of the Royal Engineers and Civil Architect to the Admiralty.
Inside the front board is the name Philip Howells ( 1922-2016) who acquired the book in 1938. George Joseph Philip Howells was an artist and teacher working in Cornwall. Philip Howells wanted to find out information about Lady Mary Shepherd and saw her name mentioned in a newpaper article about the book 'Elizabeth Barrett to Miss Mitford' published in 1954 and edited by the author Betty Miller. Betty answered his enquiry and the hand written reply and the newspaper articles along with Philip's notes are stuck inside the back of the book.
The book is printed on good quality paper and the pages are gilt edged. It has foxing, rather a lot on the front and back pages but not so severe in the centre. There are a few underlinings and margain notes in pencil. The binding is still firm. The boards are bound in brown leather with a gilt design on both front and back. The spine is ridged and that is also decorated. The board corners are worn and there is some fraying to the leather at the top, bottom and sides of spine. It has a few scuffs and scatches but not bad for age. Length 22.25cms, width 13.5cms, 216 pages. A wonderful historical collector's item.
