Seller's Description
Printed monochrome postcard showing a view of the interior of the Basilica at Albert in Somme, France and showing damage caused by the First World War. The title of the card has been censored by obliteration to obscure the location as the war was still ongoing when it was sent. Albert has been added later, possibly by the recipient. A Lance Corporal Arthur Hillier enlisted with the Royal Berkshire regiment, and served with the 1st battalion. His Army number was 17505 and he was fatally wounded and died on 4 October 1916, a mere ten days after this card was written. He is buried at Euston Road cemetary near Colincamps in Somme. He was 23 (see here for more details).
Published by R. Pruvost, Paris, No 227.
Postally unused, but with message dated 24 September 1916 and addressed from Arthur to Mrs A. Hillier.
Good condition, with slight corner bumps.
