Seller's Description

Original 1894 5 1/8 inch x 7 7/8 inch Chromolithograph titled INDIAN RHINOCEROS.

The Indian rhinoceros lives primarily in northern India and Nepal. These massive beasts have some noticeable physical differences from their African relatives. Their segmented hide looks like a formidable coat of natural body armour. Its functions are similar: the flexible skin between the thicker hide “plates” allows them to shift as the rhinoceros moves.

Engraved by Pierre Jacques Smit (1813 - 1903). A natural history illustrator of the Victorian era in England.

This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.

The page size is 10 inch x 6 5/8 inch

The chromolithograph is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
