Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
Hackness is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of the county of North Yorkshire, England.
Hackness is mentioned as the site of a double monastery or nunnery by Bede, writing in the early 8th century. The church of Saint Mary has fragments of a high cross dating from the late 8th or early 9th century. The fragments preserve parts of a Latin prayer for Saint Æthelburg and an illegible inscription apparently in the runic alphabet.[2]
The village was the birthplace of British sculptor Matthew Noble
According to the 2001 UK census, Hackness parish had a population of 125.[1]
The parish council is Hackness & Harwood Dale Group Parish Council which covers the six parishes of Broxa-cum-Troutsdale, Darncombe-cum-Langdale End, Hackness, Harwood Dale, Silpho and Suffield-cum-Everley.[3]
