Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
Joseph Grimaldi (18 December 1778 31 May 1837), was an English actor and comedian who is perhaps best known for his invention of the modern day whiteface clown. He chiefly appeared at Drury Lane in pantomime, where his greatest success was appearing in Harlequin and Mother Goose; or the Golden Egg and followed with a successful performance at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden.
Grimaldi was born in Clare Market, London, into a family of professional dancers and clowns.[1] His Italian father, Joseph Giuseppe Grimaldi (d. 1788), was a dancer at the King's Theatre in Haymarket by 1758. He was later engaged by David Garrick to play Pantaloon in pantomimes at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and to act as the ballet-master.[1] Grimaldi's mother, Rebecca Brooker, was also a dancer. She had been apprenticed to his father since 1773 and had become his mistress shortly afterwards, although she was still less than fourteen years old when Grimaldi was born. Grimaldi's paternal grandfather, Giovanni Battista Grimaldi appeared on stage as ""Iron Legs"" and was briefly popular in Italy and France,[1] though he spent time in the Bastille after a scandalous performance, and he later defrauded John Rich in London before fleeing to the Continent.[citation needed]
The young Grimaldi made his dbut before the age of three at the Sadler's Wells theatre in April 1781.[1] He also took part in the Drury Lane Christmas pantomime later that year. In 1782, he attended Mr Ford's academy, a boarding-school at Putney, but he continued to act. He performed concurrently at Drury Lane and Sadler's Wells, often on the same night, occasionally running between the theatres. Grimaldi's father died in 1788, when young Grimaldi was nine, leaving the family in poverty.[1]
