Seller's Description

United Kingdom 1965 Churchill Commemorative Crown (UNC)
This Crown is mounted in a presentation case with a double sided view. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill died at the age of 90 in January 1965. His dramatic and colourful life had led him to triumph as the inspirational Prime Minister who lead Britain through World War ll and who emerged as one of the country's most revered and greatest statesmen. The crown struck to honour this extraordinary man was the first coin to bear the head of a commoner together with that of the Sovereign. Also, with the exception of Oliver Cromwell, he was the first commoner on a coin since at least the twelfth century. Only a legal tender cupro-nickel version was ever issued. The reverse, featuring a rugged portrait of Churchill, is the work of the distinguished sculptor Oscar Nemon. The obverse bears the Queen's effigy by Mary Gillick, with the value replaced by the date.
