Seller's Description
Glasgow 1974, Old Five Ways Pub & Newmains Bus, Large Photo
Description: This is a Large 11" inch x 8" inch photo of a Glasgow 'Central SMT' bus to Newmains, seen here after it has just left the old Buchanan street bus station and is heading past the old Five Ways pub and Slow Bird Steak Bar on the corner of Buchanan Street and Cathedral Street. The pub has been long since demolished, and this 'crossroads' is now unrecognisable due to the heavy pedestrianisation and redevelopment on Buchanan Street.
But where is this?... if you stand on Buchanan Street, at the 'crossroads' of Bath Street and Cathedral Street... stand in the middle of that crossroads, facing towards the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, with Bath Street on your left, and the under-store road bridge/road tunnel on your right... then the old Five Ways pub is where the 'Sainsbury's Local' store is now, on Buchanan Street. All the buildings in this photo have been demolished and redeveloped.
Out of sight behind the bus is also the old 'Buchanan Bar & Lounge' which was popular in the 70s and previous years. On the corner of the building you can see part of the old sign-writing 'The Buchanan', which is a remnant of an even earlier era when the whole of the building was the Buchanan inn. For further information look on the 'oldglasgowpubs' website and search for the pubs 'The Five Ways' and 'The Buchannan Bar'
The Bus is a 1971 ECW bodied Daimler Fleetline, fleet number D15, registration TGM215J, route number 60 to Newmains. Central SMT used these Daimler Fleetlines in the earlier part of the 1970s.
An interesting look at a long lost street scene in Glasgow in the 70s.
