Seller's Description
Original 1890 lithograph titled FIRE PLACES FROM CRAIGMILLAR CASTLE.
Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is three miles south-east of the city centre, on a low hill to the south of the modern suburb of Craigmillar. The Preston family of Craigmillar, the local feudal barons, began building the castle in the late 14th century and building works continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1660, the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour, Lord President of the Court of Session, who breathed new life into the ageing castle. The Gilmours left Craigmillar in the 18th century for a more modern residence, nearby Inch House, and the castle fell into ruin. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument.
Drawn by Francis Thomas Dollman (1812 - 1899). Francis Thomas Dollman was articled to Augustus Charles Pugin from 1827 to 1832. He was renowned for his skill as a draughtsman and assisted Pugin with the plates for ''Examples of Gothic Architecture'. In 1833 he then moved to the office of George Basevi where he remained for twelve years until Basevi’s death in 1845. He commenced independent practice in London in 1846, and was best known for his books, which followed the Pugin format, beginning with 'Examples of Ancient Pulpits in England', 1848. He was elected ARIBA on 4 January 1846 with the influential backing of G G Scott, Benjamin Ferrey, Sydney Smirke and C C Nelson, and was librarian of the RIBA from 1863 to 1886. He was briefly in partnership with William Taprell Allen, from February 1874 to December 1878.
