Original French 23 inch x 31 inch Poster for the 1967 John Schlesinger Drama FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, based on the novel by Thomas Hardy and starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates, with photography by Nicolas Roeg
Julie Christie plays the wilful, impulsive and beautiful Bathsheba Everdene, unexpected heiress to a large farm. She deals simultaneously with the unwanted affections of shepherd Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates) and wealthy landowner Mr Boldwood (Peter Finch), while also coming to terms with her new wealth and status. Events are further complicated when she falls into a disastrous marriage with caddish Sergeant Troy (Terence Stamp), a man in love with Bathsheba’s fortune, but haunted by his ‘true wife’, servant Fanny Robin, who dies giving birth to his child.
