Les tirailleurs algériens, appelés aussi Turcos, étaient des unités d'infanterie appartenant à l'Armée d'Afrique qui dépendait de l'armée de terre française. Ces unités à recrutement majoritairement indigène (70-90 % selon les époques) venues d'Algérie française ont existé de 1842 à 1964.

Avant 1842, les indigènes d'Algérie étaient recrutés chez les zouaves.

Ils participent à toutes les campagnes militaires du Second Empire et de la IIIe République et se distinguent particulièrement lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, au cours de laquelle les 14 régiments ayant combattu obtiennent 55 citations à l'ordre de l'Armée[1], 4 régiments recevant la fourragère aux couleurs de la Légion d'honneur[2], puis lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, notamment lors de la campagne d'Italie au sein du corps expéditionnaire français du général Juin puis du débarquement de Provence en août 1944.

Les régiments de tirailleurs algériens et tunisiens sont avec les zouaves parmi les plus décorés de l'armée française.
