Extensive & exhaustive research has finally led me to believe that the likely
location of these premises is in Ilford, Essex. Trawling many useful publications
and websites yielded nothing positve, until I found four extracts that appeared in the
Ilford Recorder, in 1902....
Friday, 7th March, 1902
"Young lady wanted as Apprentice, one living in Ilford preferred -
The Bonanza Fancy Stores, High Street, Ilford"
Friday 1st August, 1902
"A vacancy for a young girl about 17, as apprentice, partial board -
Apply: Bonanza Fancy Stores, High Street, Ilford"
Friday 15th August, 1902
"A vacancy for a young girl about 17, as apprentice, partial board -
Apply: Bonanza Fancy Stores, High Street, Ilford"
Friday 10th October, 1902
"Two good steel and ormulu fenders, in good condition -
Apply: The Bonanza, High Street, Ilford"
The style/architecture of the premises has always led me to
believe that it was located in the London/surrounding area.
It may also be that the young lady off to the left of the group is the "apprentice"
Postcards (colour printed ones) from the same period have been noted, bearing
"Published, Bonanza, Ilford" and "The Bonanza, 135 High Road, Ilford."
--------------------------
Finally, and this takes things off at a tangent slightly, two cards published
by Raphael Tuck & Sons, posted in 1908 and 1912, bear the credit
"Specially published for The Bonanza, Upton Park and Forest Gate,"
Other Tuck cards, with 1920s posting dates, are credited to
"The Bonanza, Upminster," although I tend to think that
location is not directly linked to this particular postcard.
