Interesting type of the United Provinces of Central Italy under the rule of dictator Luigi Carlo Farini struck in Bologna. The coin represents short period of the existence of United Provinces of Central Italy, when they were united in 27 December 1859 to be renamed into Emilia province. Finally the process of unification brought in 1861 to the creation of Italy. During this period the dies of the last Sardinia copper coins were used. For the mint this time was in Bologna, the mint marks from the dies of the previous mint were removed. This feature - absence of the mintmarks under the wreath of the Obverse - helps to distinguish this uncommon coinages.
A note about Cyprus. The legend on Rev. in part CYP mentions Cyprus, though this very coinage does not mean it, for they were issued for Emilia province only.
A note about chronology. Though formally there were 5 days in 1859 since 27 till 31 of December, the chances are small that during those days, Bologna mint obtained the dies from Torino and started coinage, especially if we take into consideration that 31 December was Saturday and not working day. That is why the mintage was done in 1860 and not in 1859-1860 as it is given in many catalogs.
