Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
The Donkey Sanctuary is a British charitable organization devoted to the welfare of donkeys based near Sidmouth in Devon, England. It is one of the largest equine charities in the world[1] with annual income and expenditure of £22 million.[2]
Founded in 1969 and registered as a charity in 1973, The Donkey Sanctuary has grown throughout the last 40 years.
The founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE, was born in Yorkshire and although her love of donkeys started at a very early age, it was not until she was married with a family and helping her husband to run the Salston Hotel at Ottery St Mary in Devon that she was able to own her first donkey.
Naughty Face joined the family in 1969, quickly followed by a donkey named Angelina.
During a visit to Exeter Market she saw seven small donkeys crammed in a small pen. She tried to buy the donkey in the worst condition without success and, from that moment on, she decided that instead of breeding donkeys she would try and save them.
By 1973 Dr Svendsen had 38 donkeys under her care and in June 1974, she received a phone call from a solicitor who was the Executor of the Estate of the late Miss Violet Philpin who had been running the Helping Hand Animal Welfare League Donkey Sanctuary near Reading, Berkshire. The solicitor explained that Dr Svendsen had been left a legacy - of 204 donkeys![3] At that time advertisements were appearing regularly in magazines such as the Radio Times appealing for financial support for Violet Philpin’s Donkey Sanctuary to the extent that the name Violet Philpin became very familiar in Britain and synonymous with the care and welfare of donkeys.
Since its foundation the Sanctuary has taken over 13,500 donkeys into its care making it the largest charity in the world dedicated to the care and welfare of donkeys and mules.
In 2010, the charity was faced with more donkeys needing re-homing as a result of the recession and asked people to volunteer to provide foster homes.[4]
