Frederick the Wise, commemorating his 550th anniversary. Frederick III of Saxony (1463 – 1525), also known as Frederick the Wise, was Elector of Saxony. He is notable as being one of the most powerful early defenders of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. His court painter was Lucas Cranach the Elder.
