Darlington is a large market town in County Durham, Northern England. In 2011 the town had a population of 92,363, its borough had 105,564.[2][3][4]

It is the administrative town of the unitary authority of the Borough of Darlington. The authority is a constituent member of the Tees Valley Combined Authority and therefore the borough is a part of the Tees Valley sub-region to North East England.

The River Skerne flows through the town, it a tributary of the River Tees, the Tees itself flows to the town's south. The world's first steam locomotive powered permanent passenger railway, called the Stockton and Darlington Railway, led to Darlington's substantial development in the 19th century. Much of the finance and vision behind the railway's creation was provided by local Quaker families in the Georgian and Victorian eras.
