FROM THE EDITOR
SPINNING YARNS
There’s a great deal happening this holiday season for me and with all the activity, many memories will be rekindled. My younger sister is expecting her second child very shortly. It’s a happy occasion for me because her first, Kate, is the apple of my eye.
A few days ago, while we were sorting through some of Kate’s old sleepers and baby clothes, we came across a crib blanket knitted for Katie before she was born. The family friend who created the blanket has since passed on, but the love and determination that she worked into the blanket remains. Mrs. “B” as I will call her, had suffered a series of debilitating strokes. Over the period of her illness, each member of my family volunteered their time to help her learn to speak, count money and read...activities we all take for granted. She clung to each milestone and bore each relapse with a sense of steely determination.
The one skill that wasn’t affected by the divesting strokes was her great love and enjoyment of knitting, sewing and crafts. And with her crafts, she fashioned many delightful and imaginative Christmas ornaments, sewed, knitted and crafted many articles for each member of my family. This holiday season, we will hang her ornaments on the tree, keep our tea warm with her special “Super- cozies” and enjoy the many gifts she had made for us over past years. And when my sister gives birth to her second child, she will wrap her new baby in the crib blanket that was Mrs. B’s last project. She completed the blanket just before she died.
Some people may find this editorial morbid. I beg to differ. Whenever any of us take the time to craft a gift or token of love, that sentiment is preserved. I will always remember Mrs. B with love. My sister’s children and my future children will be wrapped in the heirloom blanket she created. Past tense, present and future... time preserved.
Have a very happy holiday and I’ll talk to you in the new year.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
