FROM THE EDITOR

SPINNING YARNS

There is a common thread of spring coursing through the pages of this issue of CRAFTS Plus. With the return of sunny days, spring flowers and the religious holidays of Easter and Passover, we bring to you a series of projects celebrating each facet of the rebirth of spring.

As usual, the preparation of a magazine’s editorial content occurs several months prior to you actually receiving your personal copy in the mail. This can produce strange symptoms in editors consisting of misplaced spring fever, sunburn on rainy days and, summertime Christmas spirit. During a violent snowstorm in January when I was editing the copy for this issue, a strong craving for spring flowers and light clothing struck. I was able to produce a “quick cure” by stepping into the bitter temperatures and whirling snowflakes.

Joking aside, we have five wonderful spring and summer sweaters with complete instructions in this issue. The shimmer and lustre of this season’s new cotton look yarns radiate a feeling of coolness and summer serenity. Writer Daria McGuire has prepared a special techniques column on how to work with these new cotton yarns.

Canadian Needlecraft designer Anita Green has prepared a lovely cross-stitch design featuring the vivid purple hues of the Iris. Anita has also produced a quilted placemat and tea cozy set in warm shades of rosy pink.

Home Sewing editor, Gail Brown, has created a delightful selection of hats for our first edition of a two part series on the art of millinery. Along with the hats, Gail has prepared an excellent ‘how-to” article on twin needle stitching and machine pintucking.

And finally, to celebrate the religious holidays of Easter and Passover, Food editor Josephine Kleimeyer has collected a number of sumptuous Easter Bread recipes from around the world. We have a special article on the art of smocking complete with directions for a detachable smocked collar.. .perfect for any little girl’s Easter dress. Craft editor Suzanne Whitely has designed a special Easter bouquet using stale bread dough to make dough roses.

Tie this up with a quilted baby bag and bib, special tips on obtaining gardening information and a silk painted Matzoh cover designed especially for Passover and I am sure you will find plenty to enjoy in this Spring issue of CRAFTS Plus!
