Seller's Description
Original circa 1848 10 3/4 inch x 14 1/4 inch Steel Engraving titled THE COTTAGE DOOR
A woman with baby and five small children gathered outside the door of their cottage, set in woods beside a stream with falls, fields through the trees at left.
Engraving by Charles Cousen (c. 1819 - 1889). Line engraver and etcher born in Yorkshire.
From the painting by Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788). He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, the son of a wool manufacturer. He trained in London, and set up in practice in Ipswich about 1752. In 1759 he moved to Bath, a fashionable spa town, attracting many clients for his portraits. He settled in London in 1774. His private inclination was for landscape and rustic scenes, and his amusing letters record his impatience with his clients' demands for portraits.
Text under artist’s name: “The Original in the Gallery of The Most Noble the Marquis of Westminster”.
Published for the Proprietors by George Virtue, 26 Ivy Lane, London.
Image size 8 1/4 inch x 6 3/4 inch
The engraving is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
