One on the most prominent types in the European history of coinage. Sweden at the end of XVIIth century was one of the most powerful state in the world. But it was involved in wars on the East. Carl XII was invited in Ukraine by Mazepa to struggle with Peter the Great of Russia. Due to standard traitorous behavior of locals, he lost the war in 1709. Later on His heroic return home, to protect Europe from East troops, Carl XII (1697-1718) needed money for the next, North War. He issued this small copper coin and others of the same mass and face value that should substitute the large heavy silver thaler! As the result in total he gained from the issue as much as the war costs! East for the next century never tried to come to Europe! The coin bears the god of trade and personification of planet Mercury, a plot far from the image of monarch, or his name or even a name of a country. This was done to take little responsibility for the emission of underweighted money.
