*************
The Rundetårn (English: Round Tower) is a 17th-century tower located in central Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the many architectural projects of Christian IV, it was built as an astronomical observatory. It is most noted for its 7.5-turn helical corridor. leading to the top, and for the expansive views it affords over Copenhagen.
The tower is part of the Trinitatis Complex, which also provided the scholars of the time with a student church and a university library.
One of his most well-known buildings, the Rundetårn was built upon request from King Christian IV on the reommendation of the astronomer Christen Sørensen Longomontanus (1562-1647)[1][2] and designed by architect Hans Steenwinckel the Younger. The foundation stone was laid on July 7, 1637, and the tower was finished in 1642. The Trinitatis church was not finished until 1656, and the library not until 1657. The observatory (which is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe) and the library were used by the University of Copenhagen until 1861. Astronomers having used the observatory include Ole Rømer (1644-1710) and Peder Horrebow (1679-1764). Back when it was first built, it was for the students who lived in little dormitories to study in the observatory and the library.
During the early 19th century, the Rundetårn became outdated as an astronomical observatory with instruments growing still bigger while the tower could not be expanded. At the same time, light pollution from the surrounding city as well as vibrations caused by the still increasing traffic in the streets below had made the observations inaccurate.[3] The University therefore built Østervold Observatory on the old ramparts of the city. It was inaugurated in 1861 to the design of Christian Frederik Hansen.
