An original quilt made by strip-piecing methods

Introduction I designed this quilt after teaching a watercolor quilt class based on Colorwash Quilts by Deirdre Amsden, and Watercolor Quilts by Pat Magaret and Donna Slusser (both 1993, That Patchwork Place). These books provide instructions for using fabric in a quilt similar to the way an artist uses paints on canvas. Done correctly, the fabrics “wash” across the surface of the quilt, blending and bleeding into each other. By varying the values (lightness and darkness) of the fabrics, you can achieve an exciting, wondrous look that is fun to learn, fascinating to play with, and almost impossible to stop working on once you start!
While teaching the watercolor quilt classes (all using the 2”-square technique), I also taught a class based on Carol Porter’s pattern, Colorwash Irish Chain. In that class I witnessed the students’ excitement over the way the fabrics washed across the quilt, and they loved the easy strip-pieced method that makes the process faster. Their enthusiasm inspired me to design this pattern.
The beauty of Colorwash Heart, its simplicity, plus its easy strip-pieced design and construction methods will fill your heart with joy.
Enjoy making this Colorwash Heart Quilt by combining the beauty of a watercolor quilt with the ease of strip piecing. Attain the look of an impressionist painting without the time-consuming task of cutting, placing, and sewing hundreds of 2” squares. You’ll save time by sewing strips of fabric together and cutting the resulting strip-pieced units into the segments you’ll need for making this stunning heart. By cutting a few additional 2” squares for the curves and sides of the heart, you’ll complete the design. This is the ultimate scrap quilt; most of the pieces you’ll need are no larger than 2” x 5”, so be sure to check your scrap bag too!
