Seller's Description

Carlisle 1968, Leyland Titan Bus at old Ribble Station, Large Photo

Description: This is a Large 11"" inch x 8"" inch photo of a period scene of the Lonsdale Street Bus Station, Carlisle in 1968. It is a dull midweek day and a lady with shopping basket hurries into the bus station while a Ribble mid-1950's Burlingham bodied Leyland Titan PD2/12, fleet number 1470, registration plate JCK545 and route number 68 passes her on its way into the station to pick up waiting passengers.

On the wall of the building on the right we see a sign displaying 'Lamb's Fresh fruit & vegetables, cigarettes, fresh and frozen foods, ices, chocolate & flowers', which makes one wonder if this was a wholesaler of some description, although now it is a busy newsagents. Across Lonsdale Street on the other side of the road is a shop named 'Booths', which is now 'Home Service'. The high wall and building on the left have long since been demolished to make way for the new bus station, and which is now a central reservation and bus shelter.

The building on the right is much the same today as it was then, but the railings have gone and a bus shelter now stands next to the wall just in front of where the woman is walking.

An atmospheric shot of a typical late 1960's week-day scene at the entrance of Carlisle bus station.
