Seller's Description

POSTCARD - c.1917

POSSIBLY DEPICTING

The Anchor Inn
"Good Stabling - Accomodation for Cyclists - Teas Provided"
WIMBLINGTON

........Why?........ Read on.........

Clearly visible in this image are the name of the establishment, together with the name of the licensee - Tom Woodward
After much searching I have found that there was, in 1914, a Tom Woodward as licensee of the Gladstone Arms, Peterborough
At the same time, and in the period from at least 1904-1916, the licensee at the Anchor Inn, Wimblington was Joseph Norman, Jun.
So, on that basis, it is likely that if this is the correct location, the image dates from around 1917, or slightly later
Compared to today's establishment there is not a great deal to immediately verify the location but,
- the window positioning is virtually identical
- the roof slates are very similar and
- most significant, is the 12" damp course around the premises which seems to still be there today
Now, it is up to you, the viewer, to decide....
Please tell me if you think I'm wrong! (and I will withdraw the listing for that reason)
