Seller's Description
This is the Waverley built in 1947 to replace the steamer sunk at Dunkirk. The picture dates from an 1950 original postcard.
The publishers of this card have made an error as on the back is printed
P. S. Waverley, c.1930
""This paddle steamer was built in 1899, it weighed four hundred and forty nine tons, was twenty three feet long and travelled at nineteen knots. During the war it responded to the call for as many small boats as possible to make the journey over to the beaches of Dunkirk where the British troops were trapped, the advancing German army behind them, the Channel in front. The troops ships and destroyers could not get close enough to the shore, and the small ships ferried the troops out to them. The P.S. Waverley was sunk as she waited to load up on the shore""
