*************

Burton Bradstock is a village and civil parish in West Dorset, England. Situated just inland from Chesil Beach, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Bridport, the village nestles around the church of St Mary the Virgin. Thatched cottages, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, punctuate the village, which contains two pubs, a primary school, shop, post office stores, beach café, hotel, garage, village hall, reading room and library. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 979.[1]

Burton Bradstock lies on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, which in the vicinity of the village comprises vertical cliffs up to 45 metres (148 ft) high. Near the top of these cliffs is a layer of Inferior Oolite, which contains large ammonites. This layer is difficult to access however, so fossil hunting mainly takes place at the base of the cliffs where rockfalls often reveal new finds. There is a small part of the coast not overlooked by cliffs, known as Hive Beach - this and the car park is owned by the National Trust. There is a yearly Spring Tide Festival on the beach [2]

The village has a frequent local bus service to Bridport via West Bay. This runs every hour most of the day with a two hour gap on schoolday afternoons and no service on Sundays. The village is also served by the X53 coastal bus service which runs east to Weymouth, Wareham and Poole and west to Bridport, Lyme Regis, Seaton and Exeter. This bus runs every two hours during weekdays and summer Sundays, but during the last winter[when?] it ran only every three hours during Sunday daytimes, since January 2013 the Winter Sunday service has been completely cut.[3]

Cycling between Bridport and Burton Bradstock takes about half an hour using the coastal road. The village has local footpaths around it including one to the beach and the coastpath to West Bay.

The musician Billy Bragg lives in the village.
