Seller's Description

Original British 20 inch x 30 inch Double Crown Poster for the 1936 Hans Brahm (John Brahm) Drama BROKEN BLOSSOMS, written by D.W. Griffith and starring Emlyn Williams, Dolly Haas, Arthur Margetson, Gibb McLaughlin, C.V. France , Donald Calthrop, Basil Radford and Kathleen Harrison .

A remake of D.W. Griffith's 1919 silent classic, Broken Blossoms is a melodrama set in the seamy docklands of East London. In this version, German stage and screen actress Dolly Haas reprises the Lillian Gish role of Lucy, a young girl maltreated by her brutish, drunken father Battling Burrows, played by Arthur Margetson. Donald Calthrop, Hitchcock's favourite villain rounds out the heavyweight cast as Chen, the Old Chinaman.

Poster art by Marc Stone (1909 - 1991). Marcus Stone was born in Marylebone, London, and educated at the Slade School of Art. In the 1930s he was designing posters for Gaumont British Film Studios including “The Ghoul” (1933), “The Camels Are Coming” (1934) , “A Fire Has Been Arranged” (1935), “Broken Blossoms” (1936) and “His Lordship” (1936). During World War II he worked for the War Office. After the war he returned to film poster work creating such posters as “The Tales of Hoffmann” (1951) for Michael Powell.
He did regular commissioned portraits of the "Man of the Week, Month, Year" for British magazine covers. In addition, he painted sports figures, jockeys in caricature style for the centre pages of a sports illustrated magazine and recruitment posters for the Armed Forces in the early 60s. Ultimately, he claimed "the camera put him out of business”.

The poster was produced for theLondon Pavilion.

The poster is in very good unfolded (rolled) condition.
