Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
The University of Bristol is a university in Bristol, England.[9] One of the so-called "red brick" universities, it received its Royal Charter in 1909,[10] although its predecessor institution, University College, Bristol, had been in existence since 1876.[11] The University has an annual turnover of £347m and is the largest independent employer in Bristol.[12]
The University is a member of the Russell Group,[13] European-wide Coimbra Group[14] and the Worldwide Universities Network, of which the University's Vice-Chancellor Prof Eric Thomas was Chair (2005–2007).[15] The University of Bristol has approximately 18,000 students.
Bristol is the most popular university in the UK. It receives the highest number of applications per place, with independent private school pupils taking more than a third of the places.[16]
