Seller's Description

Original 1866 7 inch x 9 5/8 inch engraving titled THE BIRD-CATCHERS

A group of children seen in a field in foreground at left, a boy at centre kneeling, looking up, together with another boy standing behind him, holding a snare, ready to pull the cord; bird cages and a bottle lying on the grass at right, and more cages are scattered in the field.
Lettered below image with title: "From the picture in the Collection of David Price, Esq. Regent's Park”.

Engraving by Edward Paxman Brandard (1819 - 1898). A nineteenth century English painter, engraver and etcher, Edward Paxman Brandard studied the techniques of graphic art under his brother, Robert Brandard (1805-1862). During the early part of his career, E. P. Brandard was best known for his steel engraved illustrations after various contemporary painters. Both brothers in fact worked closely with J. M. W. Turner on some of his famous engraved sets of landscapes. Edward Paxman Brandard also engraved Constable's The Hay Wain and Salisbury Cathedral and was commissioned by Queen Victoria to engrave a large view of Balmoral Castle. He was a regular exhibitor at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

After William Hemsley (1819 - 1906). A British artist who specialised in genre paintings. Many of his works depicted rustic domestic scenes, leading to him being described as "pre-eminently the painter of cottage life".

Published in the Art Journal by J.S. Virtue & Co. Ltd., London.

Page size 12 7/8 inch x 9 3/8 inch
