Made in 1955 by the Association of American Railroads, BIG TRAINS ROLLING examines how the US railroads keep the economy growing by providing transportation and employment. Features trains from many different railroads including Southern Pacific, Santa Fe & Western Maryland. A highly patriotic film, the film is educational in tone and follows two children as they make a cross-country trip on the Southern Pacific Daylight beginning at Los Angeles' Union Station. Scenes in the train include the dining car, kitchen, sleeping quarters, and more. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA.
This is really an enjoyable old time video. I think most of it was filmed in the 1950s and 1960s. However, it is longer in time than the 60 minutes shown here. There are actually 3 videos with a total time of 54 minutes. Big Trains Rolling is 25 minutes, Progress on Rails is 15 minutes, and Wheels of Steel is 13 minutes long. My copy on VHS had tracking problems and low sound volume, but that was a normal problem sometimes with VHS tapes.
