Seller's Description

AUSTRALIA

A century old 1920s  2d Grey Kangaroo / 1½d Brown King George V Head  postal history by BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES, CHARTERS TOWER (as indicated in the back cover embossed logo) addressed to  The Agent, Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd, 55 Wall Street, New York, USA in good to fine condition.

The standard airmail letter rate to non British Empire countries should be 3d instead of 3½d. It appears to be an overpaid airmail letter service. Perhaps the big bank can afford the extra ½d letter rate.

The Standard Bank of South Africa, Limited established 1862 with HEAD OFFICE at 10 Clements Lane, Lombard Street, London, E.G,  HAMBURG AGENCY located at 27 ALSTERDAMM, and NEW YORK AGENCY located at 55 WALL STREET.

The Bank of New South Wales (BNSW), also known commonly as The Wales, was the first bank in Australia, being established in Sydney in 1817 and situated on Broadway. During the 19th century, the bank opened branches throughout Australia and New Zealand, expanding into Oceania in the 20th century. It merged with many other financial institutions, finally merging with the Commercial Bank of Australia in 1982 and being renamed to the Westpac Banking Corporation on 4 May that year under the Bank of New South Wales

A fine piece of century old inter bank postal history in the 1920s between the Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd, New York, USA and Bank of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
