Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria is a town and a municipality in Las Palmas province of the Canary Islands. It is located on the north side of Gran Canaria island. Its population is 13,811 (2013),[2] and the area is 42.59 km2(16.44 sq mi).[1]
The town Santa María de Guía is situated in a valley 2 km (1 mi) from the coast, 19 km (12 mi) west of Las Palmas. The municipality stretches from the coast into the mountainous interior of the island. The GC-2 motorway passes north of the town.
The caves of Valerón, also called cenobio de Valerón, is a property of cultural interest in the "archaeological site" category. It is the largest pre-Hispanic collective granary. Its size is representative of Gran Canaria agriculture, unique among the Canaries islands in that it was traditionally dominated by plantations, with much of these being grains, rather than by stock-breeding.[3]
Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria, comúnmente conocida como Guía, es un municipio español perteneciente a la provincia de Las Palmas (Canarias). Está situado al norte de la isla de Gran Canaria.
Tiene una extensión de 42 km², y una población de 14.069 habitantes (INE, enero de 2009). Su densidad de población es de 330 hab./km². La altitud media del municipio es de 180 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
El mayor núcleo poblacional de este municipio es la localidad de La Atalaya, situado al norte del municipio, que abarca la mayor parte de su zona costera y se ubica en las faldas del Pico de la Atalaya o montaña de Ajódar o de Gáldar. También cabe destacar otros barrios como Montaña Alta, Casas de Aguilar, San Juan, La Dehesa, El Gallego, San Roque, La Montaña, Anzo, La Cuesta y Becerril.
El municipio de Santa María de Guía, situado en el norte de la isla de Gran Canaria se reconoce por su naturaleza agrícola, sus diferenciados paisajes de verdes medianías y de rocosas y erosionadas costas y sobre todo, por ser un lugar donde se respira historia y con un gran valor patriomonial, arqueológico, arquitectónico, artístico y etnográfico, cuna de grandes artistas, y donde se mantienen y reviven tradiciones centenarias, como la elaboración del famoso y especial Queso de Flor, la tradicional Fiesta de Las Marías y artesanías típicas.
