Seller's Description
Original 10 3/4 inch x 8 1/8 inch Single-Sided Wood Engraved Cartoon page titled AS HE’D LIKE IT from Punch, October 3, 1891.
The figure of William represents Michael Edward Hicks Beach (1837 – 1916), known as Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bt, from 1854 to 1906 and subsequently as The Viscount St Aldwyn to 1915, was a British Conservative politician. Known as "Black Michael", he notably served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1885 to 1886 and again from 1895 to 1902 and also led the Conservative Party in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1886. Due to the length of his service, he was Father of the House from 1901 to 1906, when he took his peerage. The central figure of Touchstone represents John Morley, 1st Viscount Morley of Blackburn, OM, PC, FRS, FBA (1838 – 1923). A British Liberal statesman, writer and newspaper editor.
The cartoon was wood engraved by Joseph Swain (1820 -1909) from an illustration by Sir John Tenniel (1820 - 1914), both were regulars on Punch magazine.
Punch, or The London Charivari, was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
The page is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
