VFR GPS, but may also be used for IFR operation if connected to an Apollo remote Loran sensor. (These sensors are very rare, so unless you already own one, you should consider this a VFR GPS.)

Complete database capabilities are part of the Apollo 2001 system using Flybrary datacards programmed with up-to-date data on airports, approaches, VORs, NDBs, intersections, and restricted airspace.

The Apollo 2001 GPS features:
   High intensity alphanumeric LED display - The 2001 GPS's display is always readable, even in direct sunlight. This brightness is not a liability at night, due to automatic LED brightness control.

   Pilot-focused operations - "Direct To" navigation takes you straight to any database or pilot-defined waypoint. The navigation computer is capable of setting up parallel track offset courses. Restricted airspace warnings are based on three-dimensional modeling, so you will not get warnings that aren't appropriate for your altitude.

   Ease of use - Before you can use any GPS, you need to learn how to operate it. This GPS contains internal simulation software, so you can learn how to use it when you are safely on the ground. This allows you to devote your full attention to learning how this system works, and how it can make your flying more accurate and safe. The navigation pages may be customized, and set up for hands-free automatic scrolling at a variable rate. The 2001 GPS has the ability to store 200 pilot-defined waypoints. You may also build and save 10 flight plans of 20 waypoints each with automatic waypoint sequencing.

   Peace of mind - An Emergency Search function quickly displays the 20 nearest airports (other waypoint types are available as well). Even better, the pilot may set search criteria based on runway length, surface, and lighting. With search criteria, time isn't spent deciding about airports that can't be used.

   Database capability - The 2001 GPS uses standard Flybrary database cards with comprehensive information for the selected region of the world. These database cards are front loading, which makes it much easier to keep the data up-to-date.

   Compatibility - The 2001 GPS is compatible with an external CDI, HSI, Autopilot, Fuel Sensor, and Blind Encoder. Even though this GPS does not have an internal Moving Map, it may be used to provide position information to an external Moving Map.
