Seller's Description
Original 10 3/4 inch x 8 1/4 inch Wood Engraved Cartoon page from Punch, October 3, 1934.
“BUT, EDITH, YOU MUST LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE. ANYWAY, TIBBLES CAN’T BE RUN OVER.”
The cartoon is by William Leigh Ridgewell (1881 - 1937). Artist, Illustrator and Lithographer. Brighton School of Art graduate. In India, during World War I he drew posters for the Indian War loan and contributed cartoons and sketches to The Looker-On and Indian Ink. Back in England, 1920-1937 he contributed to Punch, influenced greatly by Fougasse and Bateman.
Punch, or The London Charivari, was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
The page is in very good condition with printed text and another cartoon on the reverse.
